Pictures against the war – Cartoons and illustrations from Ukraine
Since the outbreak of the war, the Kyiv-based community Pictoric has been publishing works of Ukrainian illustrators who deal with the invasion of the Russian army into their homeland. Presented here is a selection of ten female illustrators and one male illustrator. These are sometimes quiet and personal, sometimes striking works, equipped with militant slogans; others are abstract and universally clear. The works have in common the urgency of the historical situation and the clearly formulated claim of the initiative to carry these images into the world. They convey an unexpectedly deep glance into the horrors of war and the mental state in which Ukrainian society finds itself. But they also give hope because where art still exists, not everything is lost.
